Description: Francis N. Hveem began his 46 year career with the Division of Highways in District 2 in 1917. Mr. Hveem was an early leader and innovator in asphalt mix design, whose contributions to highway engineering are known worldwide. He developed the Hveem Method of designing paving mixtures and the Hveem Stabilometer during his early tenure with the Division of Highways. He was Chief of the Materials and Research Laboratory (now often referred to as the TransLab) at the time of his retirement in September, 1963, and helped guide the TransLab to international renown.
